Kids on a Mission Take the Stage at #BlogHer15
Today, we announce the keynote that will kick off the #BlogHer15: Experts Among Us conference on Friday morning. We're bringing three amazing women to the stage: Girl Scouts CEO Anna Maria Chávez, journalist and Starfish Foundation founder Soledad O'Brien, and one of the masterminds behind our Hatch initiative, SheKnows Media's Chief Revenue Officer Samantha Skey.
The theme of the morning is The Next Generation, and we'll be talking about—and with—young people. That's right, with: They'll be joined onstage by the scouts, scholars, and youth ambassadors they work with. Expect some cute, a lot of wow, and a new perspective on how kids and young adults are living, learning, and leading, on- and offline.
Anna Maria Chávez & Girl Scouts of the USA
As CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA. Anna Maria has led the Girl Scouts' evolution to focus on supporting girls in their science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning, including this year's launch of Digital Cookie. The organization's approach to STEM is framed in leadership—specifically, using leadership skills to make the world a better place.
Anna will be joined by a group of Girl Scouts who are accomplished innovators and leaders. Expect them to talk about what inspires them, how the Girl Scout Leadership Experience has helped to empower them, and about those STEM-focused programs (Robotics! Coding! YES!).
Soledad O'Brien and Starfish Foundation
). She and her husband, Brad Raymond, created the Soledad O'Brien & Brad Raymond Starfish Foundation to help disadvantaged young women get to and through college.
Soledad will be joined by top Starfish Scholars. Expect these young women of "intellect, resilience, and spark" to share their experiences, the opportunities they've discovered through education, and goals for the future … and to hear more from Soledad about why she established Starfish.
Samantha Skey and Hatch
Samantha is one of the masterminds behind SheKnows Media's groundbreaking Hatch initiative, a media literacy program that empowers children to create their own personas online through positive storytelling. The result: content for grown-ups, made by kids:
Samantha will be joined by Hatch Ambassadors who are already making their voices heard across social media. Expect these articulate kids to share insight into the social networking generation they belong to, and for they—and Samantha—to talk about how Hatch has touched their lives.
The First-Ever Next Generation Conference Track!
Our work with the next generation doesn't stop with the keynote: We have a whole track at #BlogHer15: Experts Among Us to build on these conversations.
For grown-ups, there's the Hatch track, aimed at parents and other adults who work with kids. Also appropriate for tweens and teens, this track will explore growing up in today's hyper-connected environment. We'll talk about dealing with FOMO (the fear of missing out), "Like anxiety," and helping kids to be good digital citizens.
For kids, we're hosting our first-ever programming just for them at a BlogHer Conference. Building on the work SheKnows has been doing since launching the Hatch Initiative last year, we will present a hands-on workshop, called Hatch Labs. The oldest of our Hatch Ambassadors will mentor children, tweens, and younger teens as they learn how to lead. Participants will learn about speaking up productively, define causes with personal meaning, and understand their social footprint and how it reflects on them now, and in the future.
Before the conference, we'll ramping up with the launch of a new Hatch video, Twitter chats, and more conversation with and about kids, teens, and college students.
The BlogHer Conference has always been about inspiring women to express their unique points of view through content creation. We're thrilled to talk to this next generation onstage, and learn from and with them—and their mentors. We hope you join us, and we're introducing special Hatch conference registration options to give you flexible options for bringing your kids.
