Carla Hall, Freddie Prinze Jr. Talk 'How to Be a Celebrity-Chef' at #BlogHerFood16
I'm excited to announce the first of our #BlogHerFood16 keynotes today: What It Takes to Be a Celebrity-Chef. Our closing keynote will feature restauranteur, cookbook author, "Top Chef" winner, and "The Chew" co-host, Carla Hall, along with actor and author of the new cookbook "Back to the Kitchen," Freddie Prinze Jr., and Lisa Lillien, a New York Times best-selling author and creator of the Hungry Girl brand.
Clearly, the concept of celebrity chefs is not new — we've been lionizing the masters of the kitchen since Julia Child's time — but with the explosion of niche cable TV channels and then social media, we've seen the nature of that celebrity intensify. The opportunity and the pressure to "perform" has certainly increased for chefs who want to move from the kitchen to a more public arena. And we've also seen social media influencers becoming food stars, and stars from other media joining the world of food celebrity.
But that all represents opportunity! You can be a celebrity via your social media platforms alone, and celebrities and weblebrities (as I like to call them) alike can broaden their reach via cookbooks, TV cooking competitions, and an ever-growing schedule of personality-driven cooking shows.
There has never been a better time to turn a personal passion and special talent for food into a new type of career. This keynote will explore how to handle establishing credibility, growing a fan base, and staying focused on what you love best —the food—while navigating the new continuum between chef and celebrity-chef.
